Why does mankind need saving?

Sadly, our first ancestors chose to rebel against God (Genesis 3). The result was that sin and death entered into God's creation and spread throughout all creation (Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:21). Accordingly, the Bible teaches us that all people are sinful and have fallen short of the perfection God requires (Romans 3:23). This means that all people start out separated from God and are both incapable and unwilling to obey God because by nature people love to sin (Ephesians 2:1-3).

Biblically, sinning is failing to live up to God's standard. And God's standard for humanity is perfection (Genesis 17:1; Leviticus 19:2; Matthew 5:48; 1 Peter 1:15). God also gave humanity numerous lists of sins to help protect us from sinning and to live according to His standard. The most famous list is the Ten Commandaments (Exodus 20:1-20). Therefore, what the Bible calls sin is sin no matter how we may feel about it today.

But sin runs deep, all the way to the core of who we are as individuals. Thus, sin does not just include the external act but also the internal affections and motivations of people (Matthew 5:21-7:27). In the final analysis all people stand guilty before God of sinning no matter how many good deeds they have done because no one has lived a perfect life in though, word, affection, motivation, and deed.

Since all people are sinners by nature who are incapable and unwilling to obey God, everyone has earned hell, death, and the grave (Romans 6:23). Death and Hell are simply what everyone of us deserves because of our sinfulness. God is not being cruel or vindictive when He throws people into Hell, He is being just. Death and Hell are what we have earned because we rebelled against God through our sins.
