How am I saved?

There is only one way to avoid an eternity in Hell. And Jesus is that way. Jesus Himself taught as much when he said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). Did you catch the three definite articles and the universal negative? Jesus was emphatic there is absolutely no other way to Heaven and eternal life except Jesus.

Salvation itself is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8). Meaning you cannot earn salvation by doing good works, being born into a Christians family, or anything elese. Yet Jesus commanded all people to repent and believe (Mark 1:15). Repentance and belief are two sides of the same coin of salvation. One must do both to benefit from the salvation Jesus secured.

Repentance, is a gift from God (Acts 11:18) accomplished by the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 1:5, 9). Biblically, repentance means to turn away from sin. It requires the rejection of sin by a change of mind, heart, and affections. And a subsequent turning to God and accepting His lordship over your life. Therefore, what the Bible describes as sin, is sin not matter what the popular culture says.

We know our repentance is genuine when our lives begin to and increasingly reflect the life of life of Christ. Meaning that our actions ought to reflect our faith in Christ (Acts 26:20; Matthew 3:8; James 3:12). If you claim to have repented but your life reflects the attitudes and desires of the world than you know that your repentance was not genuine (Galatians 5:16-17).

To believe (i.e. to have faith) means to trust and depend on both Jesus as a person and the work He accomplished on the cross. Contrary to popular opinion believing in God is not a simple belief that He exists (James 2:19) nor is faith biblically understood unreasoned (Hebrews 11:1). For Christians our faith has a content that is revealed to us in the Bible. We affirm that the Bible is trustworthy because we have looked at its truth claims and the Holy Spirit has convinced us that they are true (John 16:13; Romans 8:14-16; Galatians 4:6).

As a result to believe means to have full confidence and trust in Jesus. Understanding that we cannot save ourselves and that only by trusting in Jesus and what He accomplished on the cross can we be saved (Galatians 2:16; Romans 4:4-5; Ephesians 2:8-9).

To accept Jesus Christ as the your personal lord and savior does not require a special act. There is no priest that needs to be involved. No special rite to do, prayer to pray, gift to give, or good work to accomplish.

According to Romans 10:9 all you have to do is confess that Jesus is Lord (i.e. repent) and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead (i.e. believe). God saves everyone who calls on the name of Jesus (Romans 10:13). You can do this from anywhere, at anytime. This is the MOST IMPORTANT decision you will ever make!
