What must we know about God?

The universe did not start from nothing. It had a creator and that creator is God (Genesis. 1). The Bible is clear that God is the one who created the every single molecule in existence and personally made all the things in existence (Isaiah 45:18; John 1:3). And not only did God create everything in existence He also sustains the universe (Colossians 1:17) which includes humanity (Acts 17:28). Thus, God alone is eternal without a beginning or end (Revelation 22:13) and all of creation depends upon Him.

One of God's defining attributes is his holiness (Isaiah 6:3). Holiness communicates the idea of being "separated." God being holy implies two things first, God is totally distinct from creation. Thus, nothing in creation can compare to God. Secondly, God is separated from the immorality present in our world. In fact, God is incapable of sinning (James 1:3; Psalm 5:4; 1 John 1:5).

Since God is the creator and sustainer of all things He also has the soveregin right to rule creation as he sees fit. God's sovereingty over creation is taught throughout the Bible (Ephesians 1:4, 11; Job 42:2; Proverbs 16:33; Matthew 10:29-31). God's sovereignty also means that God has set the standard by which humanity is to conduct itself (Exodus 20: 1-17; Micah 6:8; Titus 2:11-12; Ephesians 4:32). The greatest command that God gave humanity was to love Him above all other things and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40).

God's sovereignty also means that God is the judge of the universe (Genesis 18:25). And since God is also holy, He hates those who violate (i.e. sin) His sovereign decrees. Thus, God in righteousness justly judges us for our sinful actions (Isaiah 33:33; Psalm 7:11; Acts 17:30-31). God's judgement is NOT arbitrary. Rather God is holding us accountable for our actions which we made freely.

The Bible describes God in many ways. Yet the overarching theme of Scripture is that God is love (1 John 4:8, 16). God's love is not merely an emotional state, mindset, or action that comes and goes. Instead love is one of God's attributes and describes His very essence and nature (Exodus 34:6-7). Hence, God is the very definition of love itself. And it was God's perfect eternal love that compelled Him to send Jesus to die for sinners (John 3:16).
